ella emhoff: the first daughter of bushwick, “coconut brown”, & late stage social media
ella emhoff is the fashionable first daughter we deserve
Hi there, trendfriends!!
Welcome to yet another week of trends infiltrating the zeitgeist. We have cycled through another week, and are excited to report to you live from Brooklyn and West Philly. There were so many micro-moments to touch on this week, sparking memes and discourse about what’s happening in pop culture. Honestly, sooooo much happened that our chat blew up, and we could barely keep up with our feeds! Let’s discuss:
The DNC took place in Chicago, and with this came a slew of meteoric and memeable moments. From Nancy Pelosi’s take on the local dogs to seeing men lead with empathy to Kamala’s Chloe “Coconut Brown” suit and Ella Emhoff’s lurecore hat moment, excitement is being brought into politics again (despite false rumors and false hope that Beyonce and Taylor Swift were slated to perform). Cole Emhoff even became the gay’s latest crush thanks to two shirtless pics of him and his hairy chest going viral. Lil ‘Jon got us low, low, low, and nostalgic for middle school dance social songs being mashed up with pertinent political messaging. Plus, 200 social media creators like Gen Z repro rights advocate Deja Foxx got to attend and shoot content. She also co-hosted a “Hotties for Harris” party, featuring slogan condoms and drag queens.
If anything, the DNC has solidified Ella Emhoff as Bushwick’s first daughter. The Brooklyn-based knitwear designer and model sported the Harris Walz lurecore hat on the first night of the DNC and later an indie gown by Joe Ando for the last night of the event.
Charli XCX posed for Skims, shot by Tumblr feminist Petra Collins. Chappell Roan was featured by Interview, sang “HOT TO GO” with Olivia Rodrigo in Los Angeles, and sparked a dialogue about how pop stars are treated by fans IRL. Sandy Liang is releasing a Juicy Couture-ish tracksuit with rosette embellishments for the current age.
Bella Hadid launched another Orebella fragrance and a pickle-flavored Kin Europhics drink (note: we covered pickles recently!) and was spotted looking straight out of Coachella 2015. Beepy Bella released strawberry shorts. Gen Z singer Gracie Abrams bit the finger of Gen Z actor Paul Mescal. Hot. One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush threw on iconic outfits from her OTH days, and each piece looks like it would be sold at Tired Thrift. Kidult jewelry designer Ian Charms is selling meme purses. Julia Fox wore a Vaquera fit with pop of pink satin underwear. Anne Hathaway went snorkeling in a tie-dyed wetsuit straight out of the aughts.
Doja Cat manifested a date with Joseph Quinn and FKA Twigs donned a temporary tattoo on her face. Zoe Kravitz, who made branded lighters for her new movie “Blink Twice,” went with a classic and chic red Saint Laurent dress for the opening. Addison Rae wore red sequin pumps and a t-shirt that said “Lady F*cking Gaga.”
Lily-Rose Depp wore wired headphones in a new Chanel ad. Rosalia wore indie designs by Eckhaus Latta and Sandy Liang while strolling with Blackpink’s Lisa, who wore Coperni. Tradwife or not, viral homemaker Nara Smith was interviewed for Harper’s Bazaar. Actress Grace Vanhatten, whose show, “Tell Me Lies,” is due in September, was photographed by @dritch. Everyone uploaded their IG profiles to be roasted by ChatGPT. Jenna Ortega donned an Ozias “handbag for the recently deceased” for the Beetlejuice press tour. Jenna was also featured in Sabrina Carpenter’s new gory music video for her song, “Taste,” which could be about her past relationship with Shawn Mendes. According to Page Six, Anna Delvey is free and can return to Manhattan to host fashion shows.
WEEKLY TRENDS:
Leopard Print: A pop of leopard print continues to reign as a go-to statement piece primarily as a residual effect of the popular and controversial ‘Mob Wife Aesthetic’ that went viral earlier in the year, from Ganni implementing the spotted pattern onto everything from dresses and shoes (even being worn by Ice Spice) to Vogue publishing a piece solely dedicated to the revival of the leopard print skirt making a style comeback amongst fashionistas and editors alike. Not to mention the trending see-through leopard print Bethany Ballet Flat by Reformation, the Dolce Vita Leopard print sneakers everyone online is talking about, and velcro strap sneakers in leopard print by Isabel Marant.
Medieval Revival: As the seasons change, so does the era of aesthetics that we’re hyper-fixated on. And the latest to hit our feed is the medieval revival. According to content creator @annahyclak, the resurgence is well on its way, citing the recent flurry of internet love the Anna Sui Ready-To-Wear 1998 collection has been receiving lately, much of Chappell Roan’s campy “Good Luck, Babe!” imagery (whose visual creative director, Ramisha Sattar recently had a real talk trendfriends feature earlier this week), and fashion’s recent penchant for chain mail. Late this spring, writer Laura Pitcher even wrote for The Cut that medieval headpieces are making a comeback.
Hair Cuffs: From Allure declaring that the hair cuff is coming for your scrunchie to Maria’s feed being taken over by hair cuff hairstyle tutorials, it seems like all the girlies are experimenting with multi-hyphenate hair jewelry. Even earlier this summer, Khloe Kardashian adorned her long locks in a braid ornamented with jewelry as a wedding guest.

Late-stage social media: For those who may have taken a semester of sociology in college, you may be familiar with the phrase "late-stage capitalism." However, the concept has been adapted to explain people's widespread exhaustion from engaging with brands and product placement on social media. In June, The New York Times penned an article recently about the 'AI slop' that's saturating our timelines, while @arca expressed on TikTok how the 'late-stage social media' shift is occurring due to how brands are all jumping in on viral internet trends to the point where it doesn't feel organic to viewers (the very recent life and subsequent death of brands quickly co-opting the demure trend comes to mind).
Shit we love: Fashion journalist Emilia Petrarca documented designer trash bins. Into the Gloss playfully called out Elizabeth Banks' new movie Skincare for copying them. Max Keller wrote a beautiful piece for The New York Times called "This Is My Voice One Year on T." Maisie Peters opened for Taylor Swift in London and threw on an old Taylor concert tee. Vogue Business writer Bella Webb went swimming in Copenhagen with jewelry brand Pandora for a new story under her newly launched column "Business Unusual." Bobbi Salvor Menuez's inclusive wedding appeared on Vogue. Season three of Industry released on HBO. For The Cut, Danielle Cohen wrote about how friendships often don't survive the bridesmaid test. Gossip Girls' Kelli Rutherford said she loves being called a "Birkin Mom."
Earlier this week, Highsnobiety explored girlhood in a new editorial package featuring Sara's words about dollcore. She also investigated 'clinically proven' beauty products and science-washing for Dazed, while Maria wrote about why we're in micro-insecurity hell for Allure.
Love you!! MEAN IT, BYE!!
At this point I feel like Bella should just start creating fragrances based on Tarot cards. That's the vibe I'm getting from her marketing.
